2005 in short review

By golly, 2005 sucked for me. I've changed countries of residence, wallowed in an employment and immigration limbo for an extended stretch of time, was largely homeless, if not for sfllaw's most gracious kindness, and spent all of my meager savings trying to stay afloat while waiting for my McGill work permit to be processed.

So. Here's to a much better 2006.

Cheers!

*hick*

<gay mode="on"/>
The Nutcracker ballet was fabulous! A true féerie of light and dancing, filled with the cutest outfits, supple bodies, and plenty of handsome men in tights. Once the curtain went up, yours truly was completely lost in the unraveling spectacle, driven by the unmatched genius of Петр Ильич Чайковский, rivalled by the mastery of the famed choreographer, Fernand Nault, and garnished by the delicious selection of dancers – men, women, and children – who were all handsome, beautiful, and utterly cute, especially the three little lambs. The performance was so beautiful, I nearly cried a couple of times, feeling both proud and humbled at being of the same patrie as the composer who wrote this breathtaking masterpiece of musical delight. The only dissatisfaction that I carried away from the show was the saddening realization that 90 minutes is not nearly enough to thoroughly enjoy this marvelous feast of a spectacle.

<gay mode="off"/>
It was alright. The sugar-plum fairy was kinda hot.

Sung to the tune...

Fedora announcements are taking a toll on me. This was sent today to the gateway-developers list at McGill (by yours truly). :)

(sung to the tune of "Let it Snow")

Oh the state of affairs was frightful,
But our skills were so delightful,
We've committed the changes, oh yes!
In CMS! CVS! And Postgres!

 Though it doesn't show signs of "broken,"
 Oh, I know -- what a pithy token,
 Where it's broken is anyone's guess:
 In CMS? CVS? Or Postgres?

When I finally hissed "good night,"
All resources were snuggled tight,
Look in /global/resources now
All your apps will be there, I vow!

 Old locations are slowly dying,
 (As with Cochise we're still good-bying)
 But as long as you keep them untouched,
 The new system won't need to be patched.
(originally, the last line was going to be "in the face you won't get to be punched" but I figured it was a little bold for the "new guy." :))

Queen Victoria's New Dress

There was a brief moment this afternoon when the Sun came out, but it only lasted for a few hours: when mstango and I came out of the Musée des Beaux Arts around 4PM, we were greeted by flurries again.

The exhibition was quite interesting – we went to see "les paysages de La Provence," and the works represented by mid-19th century artists were really something. I was far less moved by the impressionist section, but that goes for most of that "modern art" stuff. :) Van Gogh and Monet were probably the only two really exciting artists among those displayed there.

The museum also has a "permanent collection" with a number of interesting works as well. I should go there with my sketchbook one of these days, since it seemed like a popular pastime with many visitors. They even provide you with a chair if you ask for one. Neat.

mstango is off to Cuba for a week, now that her exams are done. I'll see if I can go picture-taking at the parc Mont-Royal tomorrow – they are currently promising sunshine.
